The dispersal draft, held in June of 2003, is where teams drafted NHL players onto their teams for the first time. The draft order for round 1 was selected randomly by drawing team names from a hat. Each round after that was inverted from the one previous to it. The draft was a total of 30 rounds. Only NHL players with at least 1 career regular season game played were eligible for the dispersal draft. This is the league's most important draft since it gives every team its foundation.
The entry draft is held yearly in the offseason closest to December. This draft serves two main purposes: selecting future stars and adding depth with veterans. The order for each round is inverted of the overall standings of the season or seasons combined since the last entry draft. Any player drafted by an NHL team at the time of the draft is eligible to be drafted. Players who went undrafted in the NHL must have at least 1 career regular season game played in order to be eligible to be drafted. The entry draft consists of 5 rounds, but the commissioner may add rounds to the draft if he feels the need to do it. However, all picks added to the draft by the commissioner will come after the original 5 rounds of the entry draft.
